Fall in London

LondonInFall.jpg

Fall in London is a great time of year. The air is crisp, and Londoners are getting ready for the various winter holidays (Halloween, Guy Fawkes Day, Christmas and New Year).

There’s only one down-side to fall… the end of Daylight Savings Time. This Sunday the clock turns back an hour, making it more light in the morning but darker much earlier in the evening. People that get up early in the morning (such as my fellow rowers) will like how it makes training a little easier in the morning, though everyone starts to get a little down with the early evening hours.

Remember that London is at a really high latitude on the globe, particularly compared to most of North America. We are at the same general latitude as southern Canada. What this means is that our summer nights are fantastic; it’s light out until 9pm for a good chunk of the summer! Unfortunately that means in the middle of winter, it gets dark very early; the sun goes down around 4pm for a good chunk of the winter.

So fall, while a nice time of year, is also bittersweet. It’s the crossing point between the heat and long days of summer, to the cold and short days of winter.

I am from London originally, but am now a Chicago resident, and your post brought back memories of Hyde Park during Fall. I heard that the colo(u)rs in England this season were pretty spectacular – perhaps another picture to capture the colors in London for this broody expat?

    Thanks,
    Monica

    Hi, Monica. Thanks for writing!

The colours in London have been good this year, but I can’t say that I could get a better picture than the one above! Sorry about that. :(
