Fireworks across London in one week – Guy Fawkes Day!
Each year on November 5th, Guy Fawkes is remembered across the UK. Why? Back in 1605, he led a plot that attempted to blow up Parliament!
The goal of the “Gunpowder Plot” was to destroy Protestant rule in England by killing off the Protestant government and King James I, a Protestant King. Fortunately for the government, the plot was discovered shortly before the fuse was to be lit. Guy and the rest of the conspirators were caught, tortured, hanged, drawn and quartered. (Quite a nasty end!)
Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated every year to commemorate the foiling of the Gunpowder plot. And what happens on Guy Fawkes Night? Fireworks!! (It’s the only holiday other than New Year’s with fireworks. No Fourth of July here!)
There are fireworks displays all across London. The list below has the bigger and better known shows. I tend to prefer those that are set off on riverside locations, since you can take some great photos from across the Thames.
It’s great fun for the entire family! Remember to dress warm, it gets quite cold standing outside on a November night in London.
Bishops Park (Fulham, Putney, Hammersmith) – £5 on site (adult fireworks show free from Putney side of the river), 7:15pm (children), 8pm
Wimbledon – £7, £4 (children), 7:15pm (children), 8:30pm
Clapham – Free!, 7:25pm
Battersea – £5, £1 (children), 8pm

Interesting story Jed! Are those really the only two days that there are fireworks in London? They should find a day in summer to officially have a fireworks’ day, just so that Londoners can enjoy it while the weather is warm rather than on a cold November and New Year’s Day! Brrr!
Well, there are fireworks for lots of different events, but New Years and Guy Fawkes Day are the two days where you can find fireworks anywhere and everywhere!
