Foodie heaven – Borough Market
If you’re looking for foodie heaven in London, you should take a trip to Borough Market.
It’s been a food market for centuries – some people claim it goes back to the Romans – and has been on its current site since 1756, though most of the buildings are Victorian.
While other London markets, such as Covent Garden and Billingsgate, have moved out of the centre of the city, Borough Market has reinvented itself as a specialist food market. You’ll still find vegetable stalls, supplying mainly the restaurant trade, but you’ll also find some excellent food retailers as well as a number of restaurants.
Brindisa Spanish Foods was one of the first retailers on the market. Here you can buy Spanish hams and cheeses, and spicy chorizo sausages. Or you can visit the tapas bar for a taster.
A branch of the Neals Yard Dairy offers a huge selection of English farmhouse cheeses. It’s worth a visit just to see some of the huge cheese wheels stacked inside.
Cheese and wine are a traditional combination, so your next stop could be Bedales wine merchants. There are tastings every Wednesday evening, from 6 to 9 o’clock. And wine isn’t all you can buy here – charcuterie, olives, cheeses, and dried fruit are available, as well as splendid decanters.
The market itself is only open three days a week – Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But many of the retail businesses are open all week now.
