While I do think we needed a new generation of vehicles that are greener and more wheelchair-friendly, I share your concern that we're losing a lot of London's visible icons. I don't think anyone really considered what we're losing in terms of the value of 'Brand London' - red phone boxes, red buses, black cabs.... In fact, taken all together, these changes are as disastrous as knocking down the Houses of Parliament would be. But they didn't need planning permission...

I love Routemasters and black cabs. They're the first two things that I see in my mind's eye, when I think about London. I think that Ken Livingstone had made a horrible mistake, by pulling them out of regular service. He should have kept them in service. They might not cut the mustard, in the minds of disability activists, but they do cut the mustard for the majority of the world's population. I feel that Routemasters should be back running in regular service, along side the disability friendly buses that do cut the mustard. That way, everybody can be happy, both Londoners and tourists, alike.
