Rock’n'Rollers

skaters.jpgI remember my first pair of roller skates. I was nine, and the most fun I could have was skating at high speed towards a little hump backed bridge on the road nearby. If I skated really fast, I could actually take off at the top of the bridge. Wey-hey!

You can have a lot more fun than that on skates, though. For instance you could turn up at Skate Bitch at the Renaissance Rooms, Vauxhall, tonight, for some hard partying and hard skating. Roller disco is back with a vengeance – though the music has had a bit of updating since last time rollers were in fashion.

Tickets are £10, and that includes skate hire.

If you miss Skate Bitch you’ve still got a chance to go to the ‘regular’ roller disco, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Hip-hop and RnB mix with cheesy seventies hits and a bit of house.  You can dress how you like – though quite a few regulars do the whole seventies bit with neon glam or golden hot pants.

Now one of the nicest things about skating is that you keep bumping into people – literally. It’s impossible to be cliquey or snooty – particularly if you’ve just ended up sprawling on the floor after an over-ambitious dance move. And in case you don’t feel completely comfortable on your rollers, there are instructors around who can help with the basics.

Where: The Renaissance Rooms, off Miles Street, Vauxhall SW8 (Vauxhall tube)

When: 7 pm, first Wednesday of the month for Skate Bitch; roller disco, 8-midnight Thursday, 8-2 am Friday and Saturday

How much: £10 (£7  NUS members) for Skate Bitch; £10 Thursday, £12.50 Fri/Sat for roller disco
