Access all areas - signed and captioned theatre
I always used to enjoy it when, purely by chance, I ended up seeing one of the signed performances at English National Opera. The signer was often more emotionally committed than many of the singers, and the signing added to my enjoyment of the evening. (And yes, the overture is signed - not just the words to the arias.)
But I, thank goodness, don’t need a signer. Some people do. Equally, blind people may need an audio description of the action on stage to make sense of what’s happening.
The Society of London Theatres has now come out with a guide for audio described, captioned and signed performances over the summer. It’s available from the society’s website, and covers over 100 assisted performances. And you can also get it in large print, in braille, or on tape, by ringing 020 7557 6700 or ordering via email at enquiries@solttma.co.uk.
