Fares go up today

Fares on London public transport go up today by an average of 6% - ahead of the rate of inflation.

A single bus journey with an Oyster card goes up by 10%, from 90p to £1. And while the Zone 1 cash tube fare stays at £4 (which is far, far more than I pay for a similar metro ride in Paris - anyone care to give me the comparison for New York?), tube fares in other zones go up from £3 to £3.20.

A one day bus and tram pass goes up from £3 to £3.30, and DLR cash fares rise from £1.50 to £1.60.

However, there’s one little loophole that can save you some money. Off-peak fares are being introduced between 0930 and 1600, if you’re using an Oyster card. So if you can plan your day around this - start and finish close to home and do your main travelling in the middle of the day - you may be able to cut a bit off your travel costs.  It won’t help anyone who has to put in the standard eight hours at their workplace, though…

The Transport for London site has a PDF file with all the fares information on it. Strangely enough, there was no press release giving details of the fare increases, and there are no comparisons with the previous fares on the site.
