Getting to London from Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport is one of the major airports in the London area. Just outside the M25, London’s main beltway motorway, it serves both European and North American destinations.

Getting to London from Gatwick is fairly easy. Here are your options:

1 - Gatwick Express

This is the easiest option. The train leaves every 15 minutes, and the journey is 30 minutes long. It’s a little expensive, but the train has plenty of space for luggage (always nice, particularly for families traveling together!) and it doesn’t stop between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria station. London Victoria station is in the middle of London, and connects to the greater London Underground “Tube” system.

Cost: £15.90 for adults, £7.95 for children one-way. (Return tickets are slightly less than two one-way tickets.)

2 - National Rail

Another cheaper option than the Gatwick Express is a regular National Rail train from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria. This train will take longer than 30 minutes (typically around 40-45 minutes), and will stop at other stations between Gatwick and London. Both a regular National Rail train and the Gatwick Express depart and arrive at the same stations.

Cost: Starting at £8.90 for one-way, depending on time of day.

NOTE: Trains leave from Gatwick’s South Terminal. Ensure you buy tickets from the correct machines; ask any attendant in the ticket hall if you have questions.

3 - Taxi

This is certainly an option, but I would recommend against it if you’re looking to get into central London. Not only is it hugely expensive (generally £60-£80), but it will generally be slower than the trains.

4 - National Express Bus

National Express operates a bus service from Gatwick Airport to Central London. It’s the cheapest by far, though takes the longest, too. In the middle of the day, it can be 90 minutes or more to get from the airport into London, and potentially worse depending on traffic. But if you’re on a budget, you might certainly consider it.

Cost: Starting at £8.80 for a round-trip ticket

Summary

If you fly into London Gatwick airport, one of the train services is really a great way to get into the city. They’re clean, safe, and easy to use, it’s a quick and efficient journey. But I hope some of these options were helpful for your visit!
