Market Monday - Borough Market

Inspired by Jon at The DC Traveller, I’m going to start a “Market Monday” feature for London. (Jon does Monument Mondays.) London has a fascinating number of excellent markets throughout the city, some being truly ancient marketplaces, and I hope you enjoy hearing about them. Last week I talked about the Portobello Road Market.

Today’s featured market is the Borough Market. It’s a very popular amongst Londoners, and somewhat lesser known for tourists.

Borough Market is London’s oldest food market, having been established in Roman times on the south bank of the River Thames. It has been at its present location for 250 years. (For perspective, this is before the United States of America was created.) To this day it operates daily as a wholesale food market in the early morning (2am-8am) hours.

If you want to buy great, fresh food, Borough Market is the place to go. Everything from breads to candies to fairly exotic meats can be found at the Borough Market, and there are a number of non-food businesses that have set up shop, as well. It’s a great day out, and is highly recommended!

Operating Hours: Thursdays from 11am - 5pm (not everything open)
Fridays from 12noon - 6pm
Saturdays from 9am - 4pm

Cost: Free, not counting the inevitable purchases

Getting There: Take the Underground to London Bridge station, on the Northern and Jubilee lines. There are also a large number of buses that go past the market.

More questions? You can find even more information on the Borough Market at the Borough Market website.
