St. Christopher’s Place - a hidden gem in the heart of London

London has a multitude of hidden alleyways and small streets that are unique and very quaint. One of the larger “hidden” spots is just off of Oxford Street, and is called St. Christopher’s Place.

St. Christopher’s Place is an “H” shaped area, two long streets that are perpendicular to Oxford Street, and a short connecting street in the middle. The entire area is filled with restaurants that feature outdoor seating. You can have italian, french, pizza, turkish, burgers, and much more. There is also a lot of great shopping, though it does tend to be a bit high-end, with nice clothing, jewelry, and accessories stores.

If you visit at Christmas, St. Christopher’s Place also features a very nice Christmas light display. This is an example!StChristophersPlace5.jpg

There is also a bit of a “hidden” entrance to St. Christopher’s Place. If you’re walking on Oxford Street, look for the O2 and H&M stores on the north side of the street. In between them is a small alleyway, about one person wide. (It quickly becomes much wider, but it’s tough to see from the street.) This entrance is also marked by the clock and sign you can see in the photo here:

For the film buffs among you, the middle of St. Christopher’s Place was featured in the film “Love Actually.” (The scene where Alan Rickman meets Emma Thompson before they go Christmas shopping.)

So if you’re shopping on Oxford Street, and looking for a quiet place to eat, relax, or shop at a slower pace, try St. Christopher’s Place!

It really is! I used to live near by, and it was a favourite place to take friends and new visitors. There are sidewalk cafes EVERYWHERE!

I’ve dined in the area and the choices for dinner are wonderful. I recall having a great Greek dinner there, complete with a wall to smash plates!

    Stumbled on your site.

It’s nice to see a little bit of home.

Great photos - you captured the area really well

I’m actually quite proud of myself, because I found this while wandering through Oxford Street during the first couple of days of my visit to England. It’s got a beautiful candystore, but we apparantly picked the wrong candy, because it tasted like toothpaste. It was also my first trip outside of scandinavia, and my girlfriend and me were alone. This brings back memories… :)

Looks fantastic, however, like Kevin, I believe I stumbled across the Carluccio’s in St. Christopher’s Place last Christmas. And it’s always nice to escape Oxford street!

    Great post.
