The Second World War is not over!
If you thought it was safe to come out of your air raid shelter, you’re in for a big surprise!
Unexploded bombs have disrupted London’s transport today. London City Airport has been closed to traffic, since an unexploded bomb has been found on the Olympics site.
Meanwhile, another UXB at Bromley-by-Bow stopped the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines last night.
We seem to be having a spate of UXBs at the moment - a mine was found near Felixstowe recently, and towed out to sea by the Navy before being destroyed. Here’s the official report, with some good pictures.
I wonder how many more UXBs there are in London? It was pretty extensively bombed, particularly on the east side where the docks were a prime target for the Luftwaffe. There could be many more lurking. And there are certainly enough that we do know about, according to this list.

Amazing that UXB’s are still being found 60 years later.
Not to long ago, here in Washington, DC, I recall a report of a stockpile of munitions being found near a school. The bombs were from World War I.

We recently had an evacuation in Tokyo for the same reason. But in our case they didn’t have to detonate the bomb.
As Jon said, it’s truly amazing that they are still being found so many years later.
