Wagamama, south Bank
I recently found myself with a hungry chum on the South Bank at about three o’clock in the afternoon. We’d already had a couple of pints at the Market Porter in Borough Market (Potbelly Beijing Black - yum!) and my friend mentioned the Wagamama in Clink Street.
It’s a bright, modern restaurant - not a huge amount of luxury, but enough space on the table to spread our walking guides out, and very clean and well maintained. We had attentive service, too - ordered quickly, and the food arrived quite soon (though not with the kind of indecent haste that sometimes indicates a kitchen in panic).
I was a bit dubious about noodles. Only too often you get a lot of noodles and very little nourishment.
But Wagamama did rather well. Teppan Yaki Udon delivered heaps of veg - peppers, mushrooms, leeks and beansprouts - together with prawns, chicken, and egg. Lots of good stuff there, all griddled up together and with tasty sauce and not too salty. A big plate filled the spot, even though it was a couple of hours past my usual lunchtime - and at £7.40 it wasn’t going to break the bank.
There are also a good few chilli dishes for those with a higher tolerance to spices, ramen (noodles in soup - very messy eating though), stir fried rice, and a couple of curries.
My one bit of advice would be to order a side salad with the noodles. The texture is a bit samey unless you have a salad to add a bit of crunch to your meal.
